Book Review: The One Thing

When you’re working in the studio, you listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts.

I thought it may be time to start sharing out some of the helpful nuggets from these books in case they help your practice as much as they help mine.

This time, it’s The ONE Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

The overarching question: What’s the ONE thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else will become easier or unnecessary?”

Such a strong and direct question that sounds so simple, but in reality it’s much more difficult than it appears. It becomes less of a question about ‘what should I do’ and turns to ‘what shouldn’t I be doing?’

This is a great book that helps you ask yourself some honest questions, it sounds surface level to begin with but it really helps you question whether you’re passively reacting to your day and your ‘have-to-do’s or if you’re actively and intentionally pursuing your goals or your ‘must-do’s.’

You can ask yourself this same question for your Artwork.

‘What’s the one thing I can do for my artwork, such that by doing it all other things become easier or unnecessary?’

Perhaps it’s:

  • learning/mastering one specific skill

  • signing up to a class to devote time

  • focusing on one material

  • choosing one subject media

  • waking up an hour earlier to paint

And coupled with that, what must you stop doing in order to focus on that one thing? You’ll know the right answer for you.

The One Thing has been a timely reminder that more is not better - better is better.
